Tourism

Petra is located in Jordan. Tourism to Petra was not possible until 1994 when a peace treaty was signed by Israel and Jordan. In 2007, Petra was voted onto the list of the New World's Seven Wonders. However, due to the unrest in the Middle East tourism has declined dramatically in the past 5 years. Many tourists fear for their safety. Another common reason for the decline in tourism is due to the high fees not only to enter Jordan but also to visit Petra. The entry fee for a non-Jordanian adult is 50-90 Jordanian Dinar (about $127 US Dollars). There have been many options discussed to revitalize the tourist industry.

Tourism brings revenue to this region; however it also comes at a cost. Petra has been placed on the 100 Most Endangered Sites list four times from 1996 to 2002, just shortly after tourism began.
